Clinical Analysis of the Effect of Maternal Age on Primary Cesarean Birth Rate

Abstract
We have analysed in retrospect the effect of maternal age on primary cesarean birth rate during the years 1989~1992 in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, College of medicine, University of Ulsan, Asan medical Center. Among 5,814
consecutive
deliveries, primary cesarean birth rate was 17.3% and the significant increase of primary cesarean birth rate was seen with increasing maternal age (p=0.002, R©÷=0.323). This increase occurred over the entire reproductive age span.
A comparison was also made of the rates of primary cesarean birth according to their major indications, but they do not reveal the relationship between maternal aging and primary cesarean birth rates on account of operative indications, except in
case
of placenta previa (P=0.0287, R©÷=0.177) and pregenancy induced hypertension (P=0.031, R©÷=0.172).
